Description

The objectives of the Doctoral Program in Wastes Management and Treatment are:
- Provide specialized training that can develop in students the ability to contribute to the advancement of waste treatment and recovery processes and technologies through creative and autonomous research.
- Promote excellence and research in the field of waste treatment and recovery, with emphasis on finding new solutions and their design and modeling, optimizing existing solutions and more efficiently operating treatment facilities as well as integrating associated technologies to reduce negative environmental impacts.
- Institute advanced training in Waste Management and Treatment, and use it as an affirmation and prestige factor for School of Engineering from the University of Minho - EEUM, and it should be noted that this is a pioneering course in the European Area.
- Increase scientific activity in EEUM by consolidating the high quality scientific knowledge that has been developed in this field by the 5 research centers involved.

Key learning outcomes

The doctoral program in Waste Management and Treatment aims to:
1. Prepare trainees to acquire systematic understanding skills in this specific field, along with more comprehensive training in broader areas, to provide integrated and high-quality training degree;
2. Give trainees the competences, skills and research methods that ensure the ability to design, adapt and carry out a high level scientific research project, according to internationally accepted quality and innovation parameters, and also allowing them to design and implement new products and new business ideas;
3. Promote the advanced training of technology and engineering specialists in this field, with the ability to translate scientific and technological advances into the industrial sector or to manage different types of waste;
4. Ensure the promotion of excellence and research in the field of Waste Management and Treatment with emphasis on finding new solutions and their corresponding design and modeling, on optimizing existing solutions and on the more efficient operation of treatment facilities, as well as in the integration of associated technologies to reduce negative environmental impacts.

Access to higher education

The conclusion of this Doctoral degree allows the realization of research activity at post-doctoral level

Careers

The Doctoral Program in Waste Management and Treatment is a pioneering educational offer at national and European level, providing a market response to the national growth of the industrial sector in waste treatment and recovery, thus opening horizons of entrepreneurship and employability to trainees, crucial in the economic state of the country.
This training will prepare skills, still scarce, to meet the requirements of European legislation, which set more restrictive targets for waste disposal and aimed at zero waste in the life cycle of construction. In this context, specialized professionals will be trained with increased eco and sustainability skills that through their engineering actions will project a better quality of life for present and future generations, thus contributing to the preservation of the planet
Doctorates in Waste Management and Treatment will be responsible for performing positions of responsibility, developing and coordinating research, managing complex processes and qualified people, both in the industrial fabric and in the national and international technical-scientific systems, constituting a response to market needs.
