The first edition of Fibrenamics Impulse was held
on the 14th March, at the Vila Flor Cultural Centre, in Guimarães.
Led by the
Fibrenamics international platform of the University of Minho (UMinho), the
first edition of Fibrenamics Impulse addressed the theme “Creating the Future:
Technology and its impact on society”. This initiative aims at bringing
together the academic and business environment in the search and implementation
of responses to emerging challenges in society, as Raul Fangueiro, coordinator
of the UMinho’s platform and Associate Professor from the Department of
Mechanical Engineering of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho
(EEUM), explained: “Fibrenamics Impulse is a new impetus in the dynamics of the
fibers, considering the challenges that we all face, closing a new positioning
of the platform and a large set of initiatives with its partners”.
Making
the Fibrenamics platform grow and multiply every day was another of the
objectives highlighted by Raul Fangueiro in his intervention. Fibrenamics
Impulse marks a new phase of the Fibrenamics international platform with
regard to analysing trends in society and technology and in encouraging
companies to the challenges of the future by helping them to convert opportunities
in business.
The event
counted with the presence and intervention of the President of Guimarães
Municipality, Domingos Bragança, UMinho’s Rector, Rui Vieira de Castro, and
with the renowned researcher Carlos Fiolhais as keynote speaker, who focused on
the last 20 years and the current challenges of Science and Technology in
Portugal. The initiative also counted on a debate moderated by RTP's (Portuguese
National Public Broadcaster) programme director, Daniel Deusdado, which
involved the participation of representatives of academic and business
environment, such as UMinho, the Amorim Group, Impetus, JWT Intelligence
Portugal and CEiiA. This debate aimed at addressing the role of innovation,
knowledge transfer and science and technology in the transformation of society.
“The
Fibrenamics platform is a good indicator of the way of acting at the University
of Minho. This platform is in the process of growing and consolidating, with
intense scientific activity, a high number of projects in partnership with
industry, multidisciplinary dialogue practices, thus ensuring an effective
impact on its users - business and industry. I am very pleased to have the opportunity
to acknowledge the work that has been done by this platform, and I also express
a word of encouragement that this path will continue to be well achieved, as
this is the historical path that the University wants to continue to do”, Rui
Vieira de Castro highlighted.
Over the past
seven years, the Fibrenamics platform has been working on the
university-business knowledge transfer, aggregating more than 250 partners. It
has recently been recognised by the European Union as a case study in this
field, taking into account the results obtained in this field and the
innovative methodology it has implemented. This new phase of the platform
consolidates the implemented knowledge transfer model, but now in a sustained
logic in the long term.
