José António Covas is the new Director of the Department of Polymer Engineering of the EEUM Back

José António Covas, Full Professor from the Department of Polymer Engineering (DEP) of the EEUM, took office as the new Director of the DEP of the EEUM on 13th March 2017.
José António Covas, Full Professor from the Department of Polymer Engineering (DEP) of the EEUM, was recently elected director of the department for the period 2017-2019. The management team also comprises João Pedro Nunes, Assistant Professor from DEP, as assistant director.

In his acceptance speech, the new director highlighted the confidence given by his colleagues upon his election: “I will give my best to solve the problems that DEP will have to face, in order to fulfill the wishes of the team and the objectives of the department. I am sure that I will always count on the support of the School’s Presidency”, José António Covas underlined.

José António Covas completed his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1979 at Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica, in Lisbon, and his PhD in Polymer Engineering in 1985 at Loughborough University, in U.K. He is a researcher of IPC/i3n in the areas of rheology, polymer processing and compounding.

He was Vice-Dean of the EEUM between 1999 and 2000 and member of the School Council between 2013 and 2015. From 2009 to 2015 he coordinated the European Master EURHEO – European Master in Engineering Rheology. He was the first general manager of Innovation and Polymer Engineering (PIEP), between 2001 and 2005, of which he is currently a member of the board. José António Covas is a member of various foreign scientific evaluation panels and of the European Research Council. He is editor-in-chief of the scientific journal International Polymer Processing and member of the Executive Committee of the Polymer Processing Society.

The DEP has renowned competences in the Science and Engineering of Polymers and Composites. The staff are members of the research centres IPC/i3n and 3B’s, which develop research in their scientific areas of expertise as well as doctoral programmes such as Science and Engineering of Polymers and Composites; Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells; and Biomedical Engineering. The cooperation with industry is intense and generally made via PIEP.
