The Summer at Campus
programme, organised by the University of Minho (UMinho), took place in Braga
and Guimarães between 24th and 28th July 2017. The initiative completed the 10th
edition this year.
The Summer at Campus is a UMinho programme for students from the 9th to
the 12th school years. With the aim of promoting culture, science, art and
letters among the young people, this initiative helps students in their choices
in higher education. During the five days of the event, 400 students were
present in 27 recreational and pedagogical activities in the campus of Braga
and Guimarães.
The programme of the School of Engineering of the UMinho (EEUM) counted
on a set of multidisciplinary activities linked to Engineering and new
technologies, namely Engineering and New Materials, Biotechnology and
Industrial Bioengineering, Computing without borders and visits to biomedical
laboratories. Students participated in activities in pedagogical laboratories,
interactive science exhibitions and various practical demonstrations held at the
several departments of the School. Future students were accompanied by
professors, researchers and students from the EEUM during all tasks, which allowed
a more direct contact with the School’s dynamics.
The participants also had the opportunity to visit the cities of Braga
and Guimarães, to meet with colleagues from different regions of the country
and to learn – while having fun – while trying out the proposed scientific,
cultural and sports activities. “I applied for the Summer at Campus because I
wanted to explore other programmes and understand how the University works,
with the aim to facilitate my choice in the future”, Catarina Gonçalves, from
the Secondary School Carlos Amarante explained. António Teixeira, from the same
School, reiterated that he always had interest in the area of Engineering: “I
came looking for activities related to my interest in Engineering. It was a
great opportunity the visit to the biomedics’ laboratories”.
“The students took great advantage and clarified their doubts regarding
the programme they will apply to in the future. Our activities were a success
and had an excellent demand. The Summer at Campus is an event that brings great
visibility to the EEUM and we are very pleased with the results”, Rosa
Vasconcelos, Vice-Dean of the EEUM and President of the Pedagogical Council,
ensured.
The 10th edition of the Summer at Campus provided young
people a different holiday in an academic environment. Five days together with UMinho’s
students and teachers, where, in addition to the fun, the young participants discovered
the scientific area that best fits their skills and preferences.
