The signing of the cooperation agreement between
the University of Minho (UMinho) and the Millennium bcp Foundation took place
on the 6th March, in the B1.10 amphitheater of the Campus of Azurém, in
Guimarães.
The
cooperation agreement between UMinho and the Millennium bcp Foundation aims
that these institutions develop and collaborate in joint activities in the
scope of education, research and cultural activities. The signing of the cooperation
agreement, which took place on the 6th March, at the Campus of Azurém, in
Guimarães, also aimed at promoting collaboration in areas of common interest,
contributing to the development and knowledge transfer, with the aim of
establishing academic, scientific and technical cooperation programmes.
In the same
event, protocols were also signed and merit scholarships were granted to
students of the Integrated Master programme in Civil Engineering (MIEC) of the
School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) and to the international
masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC),
which awarded, in 2017, the European Prize on Cultural Heritage (Europa Nostra).
The
event counted on the presence of Fernando Nogueira, president of the Millennium
bcp Foundation, responsible for the companies Casais, Costeira, dst, Mota-Engil,
Tabique and Top/Cype, ABB, Ascendi and CJR, as well
as the interventions of José Cardoso Teixeira, Director of the Department of
Civil Engineering (DEC) of EEUM; João L. Monteiro, President of EEUM; Margarida
Casal, Vice-Rector of UMinho for Education; Rosa Vasconcelos, President of the Pedagogical
Council of EEUM, and Paulo Lourenço, SAHC’s coordinator and Full Professor from
the DEC of the EEUM.
“The
University of Minho is an example of a university with excellent prestige. This
ceremony does not only cover the private business fabric - but also the public
sphere - and the Millennium Foundation, which is a social institution of the
third sector. It is absolutely essential have a cooperation between these
institutions, because this is the only way to create useful synergies capable
of adding value to society”, Fernando Nogueira highlighted. On the support of
the Millennium bcp Foundation to the SAHC, the president of this institution
believes that knowledge, research and interdisciplinary only make sense if they
have a practical application. “Portugal has 20,000 monuments with great
geographical expression, but only 1000 have controlled visits. However, if
these spaces are well used, this will translate into a local development factor,
greater social cohesion and job creation”, he concludes.
Since 2014,
the MIEC of the EEUM has a scholarship and merit programme which includes the
payment of fees to the 15 best students in each year of the educational
programme, with a total value of around 250 thousand euros, as well as the
possibility of internships paid at the end of the cycle studies. The SAHC is
distinguished by its global reach, with students coming from 65 countries, mainly
from Europe, but also from the USA, Iran, China, Colombia, Canada and Mexico.
Over the last 10 years, the SAHC has been financed by approximately € 4 million
by the European Commission, providing unique training in the world as far as
conservation and rehabilitation of built heritage are concerned.
