Advanced PhD Scientific Internships and Post-Doctoral Programs

Advanced PhD Scientific Internships are available for PhD students and Post-Doctoral Programs to lecturers and/or PhD researchers who wish to undertake a period of study or to develop a scientific research work or training designed for the candidates, in accordance with a work plan previously approved by the Scientific Board of the School of Engineering and which is part of one of the fields of knowledge and a specialism thereof, if applicable, for which the organizational unit awards doctoral degrees.

 

Framework and Duration

Advanced PhD Scientific Internships (ECA): allows to develop an individual work project, involving research activities or training, developed at UMinho by a doctoral student enrolled at another university, under the supervision of a professor and/or doctoral researcher from UMinho. 

Duration: between 3 months to 1 year.

 

Postdoctoral Program (Postdoc): allows to develop an individual work project, which may involve training, research or teaching activities, developed by a professor and/or doctoral researcher belonging to another institution or organization, accompanied by a professor and/or a doctoral researcher from UMinho.

Duration: between 6 months to 3 years.

 

Fees and Exemption

1.       For registration and attendance, an enrolment fee is due, which includes an individual personal accident insurance, as well as an attendance fee, proportional to the length of stay at UMinho, having as reference the amount fixed annually for the tuition fees of doctoral students.

 

Report and Evaluation

1. Upon completion of the ECA PhD/Postdoc, the researcher must, within one month, submit an Activity Report to the Scientific Council (SC) of the EEUM, which shall state how the ECA PhD/Postdoc has enabled the achievement of the objectives and deliverables proposed in the work plan. The report must be accompanied by the written opinion of the professor and/or researcher who supervised the ECA PhD/Postdoc and of the respective Director of the Research Center.

2. The SC will assess the Activity Report, subsequently informing the doctoral student/postdoc, the EEUM supervisor and the Academic Management Services Unit (USGA) of the outcome of the assessment process.


Certificate

The successful conclusion of the ECA PhD/Postdoc leads to the award of a certificate, issued by the USGA, to which fixed emoluments apply.


APPLICATION, ADMISSION AND ENROLMENT

Application

1.       The application is submitted, individually, to the SC of the School of Engineering.

2.       The admission requirement should be addressed to the President of the SC, accompanied by:

​ 6. Favorable opinions, in the DocUM, regarding the proposed ECA PhD/Postdoc and the content of the work plan, by the professor and/or researcher responsible for supervising the work program at the EEUM and by the respective Director of the host Department/Research Center

 

3.       The complete application must be sent by the responsible Department/Research Center through the internal platform DocUM to "sec_CC".

4.       The application can be made at any time of the academic year, however, it must be delivered with at least three months in advance of the desired starting date of the work.


Admission and Enrolment

1.       The SC is the responsible for the admission to the ECA PhD/ Postdoc.

2.       After admission by the SC, enrolment is made at the USGA within 20 days.

3.       In duly justified cases, namely from foreign candidates, enrolment may be authorized after that period, with the favorable opinion of the SC of EEUM.

4.       The application expires if, after half a year after its admission by the SC, there has been no enrolment at USGA.
