The European project CoherentPaaS (Coherent and Rich PaaS with a Common Programming Model), which included the High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) of the EEUM as a partner, has come to an end in October. According to the final evaluation of the European Commission, held in Madrid, the results were "very positive", and the team achieved the objectives outlined as well as carried out "excellent technical work".
CoherentPaaS aimed to reduce the existing complexity of cloud computing, as well as contribute to the consistency of stored data. One of the major goals of this European project was to combine the Structured Query Language (SQL) - common in relational database systems - used in cloud data storage with native non-relational NoSQL database languages, in order to simplify them into a unified language for programmers. Thus, through an integrated data management, CoherentPaaS offers a simple solution that dramatically reduces the complexities faced by programmers.
The project distinguishes itself from most European projects because it not only counted on the participation of a large number of partners (11 partners from Spain, Greece, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Portugal), but above all they had a very rare level of integration, that is, the end result was a system as a whole, with all components connected with each other.
CoherentPaaS lasted three years and received more than four million euros from the European Commission. This European project counted on the collaboration of researchers from HASLab, such as Rui Oliveira, José Orlando Pereira, Ricardo Vilaça and Miguel Matos, researchers at UMinho and INESC TEC.
