Miguel Francisco Almeida Pereira Rocha,
professor at the Department of Informatics (DI) and a member of the Centre of Biological Engineering of the EEUM, obtained in October the academic degree of
habilitation, approved by unanimity of the jury
members.
The habilitation exams took place over
two days, beginning with the presentation of the candidate’s curriculum to the
jury members – Ana Teresa Correia Freitas (University of Lisboa), José Júlio
Alves Alferes (Universidade Nova, Lisboa), José Carlos Ferreira Maia Neves
(EEUM), José Nuno Fonseca Oliveira (EEUM), João Miguel Lobo Fernandes (EEUM),
Alfonso Valencia Herrera (National Centre of Supercomputacion, Espanha), Luís
Jorge Mateus Silva Rocha (University of Indiana, EUA) – followed by an analysis
and discussion of a report that analyses some curricular units of computational
scope included in the Master Programme in Bioinformatics. The report
also addresses a general framework of Bioinformatics area, where the emphasis
is given to teaching at national and international levels, with a global
analysis of existing educational projects and their characterisation.
On
the second part of the exam,
Miguel Francisco Almeida Pereira Rocha presented the seminar
entitled “Algorithms and computational tools for the optimisation of biological
systems”. The professor addressed some advances in computational methods and
tools for cellular modeling, focusing on their applications in development of
methods for the optimisation of organisms by their genetic modification.
The
habilitation degree is granted to professors to whom a high merit professional
curriculum demonstrating relevant research activity, advanced training or
supervision is recognised, along with the authorship of high quality scientific papers after obtaining
a doctoral degree.
