1st to 7th February,
Campus of Azurém, Guimarães.
Celebrating
the School of Engineering of the University of Minho’s (EEUM) 43rd Anniversary,
a debate on the theme “Career-Future” took place on the 7th February, at the
Noble Auditorium of the University of Minho, Campus of Azurém, Guimarães. The
initiative, part of the Week of the School of Engineering under the same theme
– which was carried out from the 1st to the 7th February – aimed at gathering
main players in a conversation about good practices in building a career and
acquiring soft skills. The debate,
moderated by the Dean of the EEUM, Professor João L. Monteiro, counted
on the participation of Ricardo Machado (Director of Human Resources of Altran
Portugal) and Edite Barbosa (Chief Corporate Development Office of Sonae
Arauco).
Apart from the debate, the Week of the School of Engineering, also
included information sessions planned for psychologists, parents and guidance
counsellors. Accessing higher education, university support services, career
options and work placements are some of the themes which are not duly explored
in basic and secondary education, particularly when it comes to Engineering.
This information session aimed at debating the aforementioned issues and
prepare educational agents to better inform students on some of their recurrent
doubts.
The event also included activities focused on future students, presently
enrolled in secondary schools. During this day, students visited the School’s
different departments and were familiarised with each particular scientific
area.
The Week of the School of Engineering was also marked by the Graduation
Ceremony, where the Graduation Books, Diplomas and Merit Awards were handed to
graduating students.
During the Week of the School of Engineering, students and graduates had
the opportunity to participate in a plenary session under the theme “Profession
– Engineer”. The main objective was to gather experts on career guidance. The
session counted on the presence of representatives of the Portuguese Board of
Engineers (Ordem dos Engenheiros), IEFP (Institute of Employment and
Professional Training), Liftoff, TecMinho and Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
In this edition of 2018, the EEUM sought to reinforce its
differentiating profile for attracting students. The results of the “Employment
Day”, which initiative included companies’ presentations and a job fair, were
promising with the final balance reflected in 2000 job opportunities from 90 present
companies.
The Week of the School of Engineering is the main event to disseminate
the EEUMs’ activities to the academic community, secondary school students and general
public.
