The
meeting took place on the 22nd March at the Auditorium of the School of
Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM), at Campus of Gualtar, in Braga.
In collaboration with
the EEUM, SGS, a leader company in inspection, verification, testing and certification,
promoted an awareness raising action on New General Regulation on Data
Protection (RGPD). Under the motto "Are the organisations prepared for the
requirements of the new regulation?", the action aimed at informing about
the rule, which comes into force on the 25th May.
The event was addressed
to the academic community, and promoted an active debate on the new challenges
and impacts of the new RGPD in organisations, which represents a paradigm change
in the protection of personal data, moving from a centralised logic in organisations
that treat personal data for a logic aligned with the protection of data
owners.
To Henrique Santos,
expert in this area and Associate Professor with Habilitation from the
Department of Information Systems of the EEUM, the importance of this
initiative (as well as other similar ones) is enormous, especially because the
regulation was adopted two years ago and it was assumed in Europe that all the
organisations during these two years gradually adopted the necessary controls
for alignment. “We hope, at least, that the task of exchanging experiences,
sensitising managers and employees, initiating risk assessment processes
(privacy), naming managers, defining privacy policies, at a minimum, help to
minimise the more extreme effects of non-compliance”, he concludes.
