Artur Cavaco Paulo awarded in China Back

Professor of the EEUM received the Jiangsu Friendship Award, created by the Jiangsu Government. The award is granted to foreign citizens for their contribution to local development and exchange and cooperation in economy, science and culture.
Professor Artur Cavaco Paulo, of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, was granted the Jiangsu Friendship Award on the 27th September, for his contribution to the development of Jiangsu province, East China. The award also distinguishes the collaboration in the framework of the International Joint Research Laboratory for Textile and Fibre Bioprocesses, involving the Universities of Minho and Jiangnan.

“It is an additional recognition of scientific excellence from Minho and Portugal”, Artur Cavaco Paulo affirms. This is the main award granted annually by the Jiangsu Government, a region of 75 million inhabitants. The award is granted to foreign citizens for their contribution to local development and exchange and cooperation in economy, science and culture.

Born in Beja, Portugal, Artur Cavaco Paulo completed his bachelor degree in Chemistry at the University of Lisbon. He completed his MSc in Textile Technology and his PhD in Engineering – Textile Chemistry speciality both at the UMinho. He is a professor at this university since 1990. Currently, he is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the School of Engineering and coordinator of the Bioprocesses and Bionanotechnology Research Group at the Centre of Biological Engineering.

Artur Cavaco Paulo has received the “Excellence Encouragement” award from the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education in 2005. He leads several national and international research projects. He is a cofounder of the International Network on Polymer and Fiber Biotechnology and a member of the Society of Dyers and Colorists (United Kindgom) and of the Cell Division of American Chemical Society (USA), among others. He has published around 300 scientific papers and is a member of the editorial board of the journals "Coloration Technology” and "Biocatalysis and Biotransformations".
