Paulo Novais and João Carneiro, researchers from ALGORITMI, awarded for paper in co-authorship with Goreti Marreiros and Luís Conceição, researchers from ISEP.
UMinho’s work in collaboration with Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP – Polytechnic Engineering School) was granted the “Best Application paper” award at the prestigious EPIA - International Conference in Artificial Intelligence, held in Porto, from the 5th to the 8th September. The event brought together about 200 international experts who discussed topics related to Artificial Intelligence.

The received award is the result of several years’ work on many projects, carried out in collaboration of ALGORITMI/ISlab led by Paulo Novais and GECAD (Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development) led by Goreti Marreiros, also counting on the researchers João Carneiro (student from the doctoral programme in Informatics MAP-I of the EEUM and Luís Conceição (researcher at ISEP-GECAD).

In the awarded project, the researchers proposed a Web-based Group Decision Support System capable of supporting group decision-making processes in ubiquitous contexts. Target decision-makers are members of large organisations, often occupying positions as top executives and managers, and that traditionally have very busy schedules.

The proposed system consists of a SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) and was specifically defined to deal with multicriteria problems. It allows decision-makers to configure their preferences (over alternatives and criteria), and their objectives and intentions (considering aspects such as credibility, expertise level and styles of behaviour) regarding the problem. It consists of a consensus-based approach that intends to achieve consensus through an iterative process. For that, a Multicriteria Decision Analysis method that proposes a possible solution according to the preferences configured by each decision-maker is used. Finally, in order to potentiate the user experience, an algorithm capable of adapting the information reported to decision-makers according to their specific interests (expertise level, level of interest in the process and available time) is also used.

“The Best Application paper award aims at honouring the scientific paper presenting the best research with a practical and concrete application to a certain domain. In this particular case, the group decision support system in ubiquitous contexts was awarded”, Paulo Novais refers. The distinction is the result of a cooperation project which has been carried out for several years between researchers from the EEUM and ISEP, aiming at designing environments which enable group decisions, using the most recent methodologies and technologies in Artificial Intelligence. The researcher adds: “For the last few years, ISLab-ALGORITMI has been working on Decision, as well as on issues and procedures within this scope, in several application areas. This award is a further step in reaching a broader goal, which is the development of (more) intelligent, trustworthy and sensible systems”.
