Full Professor from the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) distinguished by research in the prevention of occupational risks.
Pedro Arezes, Full Professor from the Department of Production and Systems of the EEUM, was distinguished with the international award “Prever” – Occupational Risk Prevention, from the General Council of Industrial Relations and Labour Sciences (CGRICT) of Spain. The award highlighted his unique path in the study of risk prevention in the workplace.

“I am honoured with this recognition, which is the result of the work of an excellent team of researchers with whom I collaborate daily and of the constant and unequivocal support of the University of Minho and its School of Engineering”, the director of the MIT Portugal Programme – who won in the “Individual” category, being one of the rare Portuguese’s awarded in recent years – said.

The award was granted at the University of Cordoba, Spain, at a ceremony which counted on the presence of its Rector, José Carlos Villamandos, and by the President of the CGRICT, José Andrés Ruiz. It arose following other awards already granted to the EEUM’s professor, such as the medals of merit of the Brazilian Society of Work Safety Engineering and the Brazilian Association of Civil Engineering, and the honour distinction of the Necmettin Erbakan University, in Turkey. Granted since 1998 in several categories, the “Prever” awards annually distinguished professionals, companies or entities that have highlighted themselves by their activity in the area of occupational risk prevention.

Pedro Arezes is a guest researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University and director of the MIT Portugal Programme since 2016. He directs the Laboratory of Ergonomics and the research group on Ergonomics and Human Factors at the University of Minho. He coordinated and collaborated on more than 30 funded projects, led over 20 studies and projects with industry, supervised 17 PhD thesis and published 100 more articles in international scientific journals.

He is also a member of the scientific and organising committee of some of the main events in the area of Ergonomics and Occupational Safety. He was a guest speaker at more than 100 lectures, half of which in countries like Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, USA, Holland, Peru, Poland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Turkey, among others. He is a founding member and current vice-president of the Portuguese Society on Occupational Health and Safety and member of the Specialisation Committee on Safety Engineering of the Board of Engineers.
