Doctorate in International Cotutelle

The following set of minimal terms and conditions applies to the conclusion of a joint Doctoral Degree with the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM):

  • Enrolment as a student of an accredited doctorate at UMinho and the second university;

  • existence of a supervisor at UMinho and another one at the other cooperating institution;

  • the doctoral program of the partner institution must be duly accredited by the competent bodies of the respective country;

  • conclusion of a specific agreement (Addendum), which should be signed prior to the student's departure to the partner institution;

  • the duration of the stays at the partner institution shall be not less than 12 months and no more that 15 months (continuous stay or divided into two semesters – or another work plan proposed and validated);

  •  the work plan to be carried out by the student should be attached to the Addendum.

Specific condition for students from the School of Engineering:

  • the student shall pay the tuition fees at the UMinho (or as foreseen in the Addendum);

  • the joint Examination Committee will be constituted in accordance with the legal guidelines of both institutions;

  • the university where the defence takes place shall inform the partner university about the result thereof within eight days of the date on which it was held or of the date on which the official record was validated, following submission of the reformulated version of the thesis, if applicable;

  • once the thesis is approved, the title of Doctor will be awarded separately by the two institutions, and the corresponding diploma must include the mention "Doctorate under joint supervision" with reference to the signed Addendum.

Specific condition for students wishing to come to the School of Engineering:

  • the student shall pay the tuition fee according to the equivalent period spent at the UMinho (information about tuition fees is available at: https://alunos.uminho.pt/EN/students/Pages/InfoUteisPropinas.aspx)

  • if the doctoral program at UMinho has a curricular component with transversal UCs, the student must complete at least two of them at UMinho;

  • the public act of discussion of the thesis takes place in accordance with the rules in force in the institution where they are required;

  • the constitution and functioning of the doctoral jury must comply with the internal regulations of the university in which the exams take place and, cumulatively, ensure the presence of a professor from the partner university, other than the supervisor, and two external professors from two other universities;

  • once the thesis is approved, the title of Doctor will be awarded separately by the two institutions, and the corresponding diploma must include the mention "Doctorate under joint supervision" with reference to the signed Addendum.
