Ricardo Machado re-elected director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre Back

The management team of the ALGORITMI Research Centre of the EEUM took over on the 14th September.
Ricardo J. Machado, Full Professor from the Department of Information Systems (DSI) of the EEUM, was elected Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre for the period 2016-2019. The management team also counts on José Manuel Ferreira Machado (Associate Professor with habilitation from the Department of Informatics), José António Vasconcelos Oliveira (Assistant Professor of the Department of Production and Systems) and Jorge Miguel Nunes Santos Cabral (Assistant Professor from the Department of Industrial Electronics), as Assistant Directors.

During the ceremony, ALGORITMI’s Director congratulated the centre’s outgoing managing team, the new managing team and also the secretariat support services as well as the centre’s coordinating committee. As far as the research centre’s activity is concerned, Ricardo J. Machado referred to several issues which distinguished ALGORITMI’s activities in the past three-year period, such as the evaluation process and its results, which led to ALGORITMI’s current national significant position in its main theme area, “Computer Science and Engineering”. Concerning the new period, apart from continuing dealing with the focal issues of the research centre’s activity, the director also mentioned as the centre’s main goals increasing the articulation with the departments associated to the centre’s activity and strengthening external image and visibility of ALGORITMI’s activities.

Ricardo J. Machado is a Full Professor at the Department of Information Systems (DSI) and Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre, School of Engineering of University of Minho. He is the Chairman of the General Assembly of the Portuguese ICT Cluster (TICE.pt) and President of the National Council of Informatics Engineering Society at the Portuguese Engineers Association. Ricardo J. Machado is a founding member of the IEEE-IES Technical Committee on Education in Engineering and Industrial Technologies (EEIT). He is also a Founding member of the IFIP Working Group on Embedded Systems. He received several technical and scientific awards, such as the "2009 IEEE MGA Achievement Award".

The ALGORITMI Research Centre develops R&D activities spreading into four major fields: Information Systems, Computing Technologies; Electronics, Energy, Robotics; Computer Networks, Pervasive Computing; Operational Research, Industrial Engineering and Management. The ALGORITMI is organised in Research Groups, which define their own strategy while keeping an open attitude about promoting collaboration within its research team. Research areas at ALGORITMI are subdivided into: Information Systems and Technology (IST); Computer Science and Technology (CST); Computer Communications and Pervasive Media (CCPM); Industrial Electronics (IE); Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM); and Systems Engineering and Operational Research (SEOR).
