Paulo Sampaio, Assistant Professor from the Department of Production and Systems (DPS) of the EEUM, took office as the new Vice-Dean of the EEUM on the 21st September.
Professor Paulo Sampaio’s appointment as Vice-Dean follows the election of the former Vice-Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Guilherme Pereira, as Pro-Rector of the UMinho for Institutional Assessment.

To Paulo Sampaio, this nomination represents “an important as much as unexpected step”, he refers. “This is undoubtedly an opportunity I will face both humbly and intensely. It is a privilege to work with Professor João Monteiro in his second mandate and thus be able to add my contribution to the upward progress line the School of Engineering has been maintaining since its creation in 1975”, he adds.

Paulo Sampaio completed his bachelor degree in Industrial Management and Engineering in 2002 and his PhD in Production and Systems Engineering in 2008, both at the University of Minho. He is a researcher at the Supply-chain, Logistics and Transportation Systems Group from the ALGORITMI Research Centre, developing his activity as professor and researcher in the areas of Quality and Organisational Excellence. He was Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the framework of the MIT-Portugal Programme. Paulo Sampaio is an elected member of the School Council of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho since 2013. He coordinates the ALGORITMI Working Group on Business Excellence and is also Country Counsellor at the American Society for Quality (ASQ) for Portugal. He is also a member of several organisations in the Quality research area, such as the Technical Standardisation Committee 80 – Quality Management and Quality Assurance, the Portuguese Institute for Quality, representing UMinho, the ASQ Influential Voices Group, the ASQ’s Feigenbaum Medal Committee, the ASQ’s Global Advisory Board and the Certification Forum of the Portuguese Institute for Quality. He has received several international awards for his work in his focus R&D area.
