João Luiz Afonso is the new Director of the Department of Industrial Electronics of the EEUM Back

João Luiz Afonso, Associate Professor with Aggregation from the Department of Industrial Electronics (DEI) of the EEUM, took office as the new Director of the DEI of the EEUM on the 3rd January.
João Luiz Afonso, Associate Professor with Aggregation from the Department of Industrial Electronics (DEI) of the EEUM, was recently elected director of the department for the period 2016-2018. The management team also counts on Graça Maria Henriques Minas, Associate Professor from DEI, as assistant director.

To João Luiz Afonso, the nomination is an opportunity that aims “to improve together so that the success can be of all in the next years”, he refers. “Another of our goals is to ensure that the students who work with us leave the University of Minho with the best training possible and that all of us – as a country and University – can profit from this”, he concludes.

João Luiz Afonso completed his bachelor degree in Electrotechnical Engineering in 1986 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and his PhD in Industrial Electronics in 2000 at the University of Minho. He is an Associate Professor in the DEI of the EEUM since 1993, where he teaches Electrical Machines, Complements of Power Electronics, Electrical Power Quality, Active Power Filters and Renewable Energy.

He develops his research activity in the Group of Energy and Power Electronics (GEPE) – which he is coordinator –, and he also coordinates the thematic strand of Sustainable and Smart Cities of the ALGORITMI Research Centre. João Luiz Afonso supervised 50 master’s thesis and 10 doctoral theses, having published over 180 papers in scientific conferences or journals with referee.

The main objectives of the DEI comprise the offer of high quality education projects in the subject areas of Electrotechnics, Electronics and Instrumentation, Power Electronics and Actuators, Control, Automation and Robotics, Industrial Informatics and Telecommunications, and the cooperation in research activities.
