Week of the School of Engineering 2017
16th
to 21st January, Campus of Azurém, Guimarães
In the framework of the 42nd
anniversary, the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM)
carried out another edition of the Week of the School, between 16th
to 21st January.
The Week of the School of Engineering was marked by the theme “School –
Region”. The EEUM promoted the debate on the impact of the School of
Engineering at national level and also in Minho, Northwestern Region of
Portugal. As a region characterised by relevant economic activity, Minho’s
competitiveness is closely related to innovation generated by the R&D&I
ecosystem, under great influence of the University of Minho and particularly
its School of Engineering.
The
first day included workshops and information sessions on higher education for psychologists,
parents and secondary school directors. Considering the broadness of an area
such as Engineering, the goal was to clarify educational agents on access to
higher education, support services at universities, career possibilities and job
opportunities for future students of the EEUM.
The second day of the Week of the School was reserved for secondary
schools with a series of activities at the campus of Azurém. During this day,
the students had the opportunity to visit the different departments of the EEUM,
where they were able to know more about each of the scientific areas. This
initiative counted on the support of student groups from the different programmes
of the EEUM for the first time and counted on the participation of around 400 secondary
school students.
Engineering's contribution to the valorisation and development of the
region, innovation, employability and the future of the country was highlighted
on the third day, through a discussion of proposals for intervention brought by
political and economic agents. The debate, moderated by Luís Amaral, member of
UMinho's General Council, gathered a panel with the participation of Ricardo
Rio (Mayor of Braga), Domingos Bragança (Mayor of Guimarães), Nuno Feixa
Rodrigues (Director of the School of Technology at IPCA, Polytechnic Institute
of Cávado and Ave), António Marques (President of the Industrial Association of
Minho) and João Monteiro, Dean of EEUM.
The
fourth day of Week of the School took place with two plenary sessions under the
theme "Profession - Engineer". The initiative aimed to bring together
speakers who provided information to students about opportunities - but also
needs - of early stage career. The sessions were held by entities such as IEFP
(Institute of Employment and Professional Training), TecMinho, Liftoff, Caixa
Geral de Depósitos and the Portuguese Board of Engineers. Alongside the plenary
sessions, the Award Ceremony of Scholarships and Merit in Civil Engineering
also took place. This award grants Scholarships to the 15 best students who attend
the Integrated Master's Degree in Civil Engineering in the academic years
2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.
In this edition of 2017, the EEUM sought to reinforce its visibility and
ability to attract students as well as strategic funding. The results of the
fifth day – “Employment Day” – were promising and the final balance was 1200
job available offers and 48 confirmed companies. This initiative included
companies’ presentations and exhibition, information on the profession – in both
national and international context – as well as information on scholarships and
projects in Engineering and Technology.
The Week of the School ended with the Graduation Ceremony, where the Graduation
Books, Diplomas and Merit Awards were handed to graduating students.
The
Week of the School of Engineering is the main event to disseminate the EEUMs’
activities to the academic community, secondary school students and general
public.
