Paulo Flores, Full
Professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the EEUM, has
been elected President of the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics (SPB). This is
the first time that an EEUM’s Professor assumes the position.
Paulo Flores, Full Professor from the Department of Mechanical
Engineering (DEM) of the EEUM, has been elected as President of SPB for the
biennium 2017-2019. The election took place during the 7th National Congress of
Biomechanics (CNB2017) at the DEM of the EEUM, in Guimarães, between 10th
and 11th February 2017.
To Paulo Flores, the election is an opportunity to “consolidate the
projects and initiatives previously carried out and to promote actions and
achievements in favour of the Biomechanics community. The EEUM has actually won
several scientific awards granted in the past editions of the CNB”, he refers. “I
would like the SPB to renew itself and become a privileged, universal and
reference room for intervention whilst representing the scientific and academic
communities, as well as civil society, industry and other national and
international associations”, he concludes.
Paulo Flores completed his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in
1997 and his PhD also in Mechanical Engineering in 2005, both at the University
of Minho. He is Full Professor at the DEM of the EEUM since 2013. His research
activity focuses on Dynamics of Mechanical Systems, Mechanics Science,
Tribology, Computational Mechanics, Biomechanics and Medical Device Design and
Higher Education.
He evaluated several national and international scientific programmes
and projects. On numerous occasions, he presented lectures and seminars in Portugal
and abroad. He is a member of the FCT Research Unit on Electromechanical
Microsystems (CMEMS-UMinho), where he coordinates the research group on
Biomedical Applications and Systems. Since 2016, he has been the editor-in-chief
of Mechanism and Machine Theory journal, the most prestigious scientific
journal in the field of machines and mechanisms. Paulo Flores supervised two
post-doctoral researchers, six doctoral theses, more than three dozen masters’
theses and 19 student’s final projects. He is the author or co-author of more
than 350 publications, having received more than two dozen national and
international scientific awards.
Founded
in 1989, SPB aims to encourage, disseminate and support the biomechanics research
undertaken in Portugal. With this objective, in 2005 the SPB started organising
the SPB Congress, which takes place every two years. These congresses promote
the collaboration among Portuguese researchers. The participation of
students and young researchers
is particularly welcomed in order to assure the development and the renewal of
this scientific area.
