The School of Engineering of the
University of Minho (EEUM) participated in the Open Weekend between 24th
and 25th March 2017. The initiative was promoted by the University
of Minho (UMinho) and was intended for future students, families and
pedagogical supervisors.
“Connect your
future”, “Hands-on!”, “Metals and their properties”, “Functional Textiles”, “3D
projection and printing”, “7 lives of a polymer”, “Say hello to your bro!”,
“Networking” were, among others, the motto of the activities carried out by the
EEUM in the Open Weekend. The initiative was promoted by UMinho and aimed to attract
future students to science and technology areas.
“This event is
very important because it allows young people to be familiar with the EEUMs’
facilities, laboratories and classrooms. Being close to what may be your
profession in the future allows the students to make a more informed decision
in choosing their study programme”, Rosa Vasconcelos, President of the
Pedagogical Council of the EEUM, highlighted.
During two
days (Friday and Saturday), the EEUM opened its doors to an open weekend which
aimed to show the School in its natural dynamics. A programme full of
activities, scientific demonstrations, cultural presentations, experiences and
lectures was offered, where the youngest had direct and privileged contact with
the academic community.
Luana
Carvalho, one of the students participating in the Open Weekend, explained that
this event helped her to develop a more direct contact with the EEUM: “This
kind of initiative also helps us perceive the number of people with whom we are
going to have to interact, the size of the facilities, which is good for us to
get used to the university’s pace gradually”. The young people were
accompanied, on a daily basis, by a team of monitors – current EEUM’s students–
who welcomed and involved the future students in various activities and
experiences. “With these two days students will take home some good memories
and lots of information about the EEUM. In fact, we only give them good
feedback on the University, because we really have good working conditions”,
Miguel Ângelo, one of the Open Weekend monitors, explained.
Between 24th
and 25th March 2017, the EEUM hosted the Open Weekend, where the
dynamics of education and science were showcased. This was an initiative
promoted by the UMinho which this year counted with around 700 participants in
the activities organised by the EEUM.
