Cláudio Manuel Alves,
Associate Professor with Aggregation from the Department of Production and
Systems (DPS) of the EEUM, took office as the new Director of the DPS of the
EEUM on the 7th April 2017.
Cláudio
Manuel Alves, Associate Professor with Aggregation from the Department of
Production and Systems (DPS) of the EEUM, was recently elected director of the
department for the period 2017-2019. The management team also counts on Paula
Ferreira, Associate Professor from DPS, as assistant director.
In
his acceptance speech, Cláudio Manuel Alves directed a special compliment to the
former direction and underlined the confidence given by his colleagues upon his
election: “The DPS is a large department with successful projects that sustain
what needs to be supported. I am sure that I can count on the uphold of the
School’s Presidency”, Cláudio Manuel Alves highlighted.
Cláudio
Manuel Alves completed his bachelor degree in Systems and Informatics
Engineering in 1998 and his PhD in Production and Systems Engineering in 2005,
both at the University of Minho. He is a professor and researcher in the area
of Industrial and Systems Engineering and develops his activity in the DPS of
the EEUM.
He
was Director of the Master’s degree in Systems Engineering of the EEUM from
2010 to 2013. He also received several scientific awards – including the Isabel
Themido prize, granted by the Portuguese Association of Operational Research.
He is now a member of the R&D Group and Centre of Systems Engineering,
Optimization and Operations Research (SEOOR) of the ALGORITMI Research Centre. Cláudio
Manuel Alves supervised more than a dozen masters’ theses and 5 doctoral
theses, having published over than two dozen papers in international scientific
journals of recognised merit.
In
collaboration with the ALGORITMI Research Centre, the DPS promotes research
projects in scientific areas of its competence as well as 3rd cycle education
projects, namely the Doctoral Programmes in Industrial and Systems Engineering,
in Optimization of Industrial Systems and Services and in Advanced Engineering
Systems for Industry (the latter in cooperation with Bosch Car Multimedia
Portugal). The PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering takes part in the
Colégio Doutoral Tordesilhas (7 national and international universities). The
DPS also collaborates with the PhD programme in Leaders for Technical
Industries (EDAM, MIT Portugal).
