Júlio César Viana,
Associate Professor from the Department of Polymer Engineering (DEP) of the
EEUM, took office as the new Director of the Institute of Polymers and
Composites (IPC) of the EEUM on the 11th April 2017.
Júlio
César Viana, Associate Professor from the Department of Polymer Engineering
(DEP) of the EEUM, was recently elected director of the IPC for the period
2017-2019. The management team also counts on Olga Carneiro, Associate
Professor with Aggregation from DEP, as assistant director.
To
Júlio César Viana, this biennium represents “one period of challenges, that IPC
will be ready to face and contribute to the growth of the School of
Engineering”, he refers. “We intend to be a differentiating research unit for the
School, but also for the University of Minho”, he concludes.
Júlio
César Viana completed his bachelor degree in Production Engineering in 1991 and
his PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering in 2000, both at the University of
Minho. He is an Associate Professor at the DEP of the EEUM since 2008 and his
areas of interest focus on the mechanical behavior of polymers, on the
relationships between morphology and properties, on non-conventional
manufacturing techniques, on advanced polymer systems and its integration into
products and intelligent products.
He
coauthored 117 articles in international journals and book chapters and more
than 230 communications in international and national conference proceedings.
He coordinated/participated in more than 17 R&D projects (9 by FCT and 8
European). He developed several activities for the industry, having been a
director/consultant of 19 R&D+i projects. He is also co-author of 4
patents.
The
mission of the IPC/i3N is to contribute to the advancement of science and
technology of polymers and composites, helping to create added-value in the
Portuguese industry through the application of R&D results and its transfer
to the economic sector, as well as the training of highly qualified human
resources,
and promoting the awareness of the role and importance of polymeric
materials in society. The IPC is part of the Associate Laboratory i3N,
Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (www.i3n.org),
research unit classified as "Outstanding" by the Foundation for
Science and Technology, FCT (2014). The research activity of the IPC develops
and integrates two components: one related to Polymers and Composites Science
and Engineering and the other to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology with these
materials.
