The European project LeanBigData, carried out by the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM), was recently concluded. The HASLAB’s team participated in the final project assessment, which took place in Madrid, Spain.
The European project LeanBigData (Ultra-Scalable and Ultra-Efficient Integrated and Visual Big Data Analytics), where INESC TEC was one of the partners, represented by the HASLab of the EEUM and the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), was recently concluded with an excellent evaluation from the European Commission. The institution stated that the consortium has developed very good scientific work “with excellent results”.

"Do it faster with fewer resources" – was the motto of the project that seeked solutions for processing Big Data analytically, combining the capabilities of both operational and analytical data. In order to fight the existing disadvantages of each type of data, the LeanBigData faced three challenges, in particular: the costs associated with the migration of operational data for analytical processing, the lack of integration of existing technologies to handle large volumes of data and their high response times, and insufficient support provided by the end user. Among other objectives, the LeanBigData also tried to fight these extremely long analysis cycles.

The project can be applied in four different areas, including aligning financial direct debits – detecting direct debit fraud in a timely and efficient manner, monitoring cloud data centres – monitoring and correlating the performance and the prediction of failures, targeted advertisement – maximising impacts and outcomes in real time and, finally, social network analytics.

This project had a global funding of around €4M.
