The connection to business sector is one of the EEUM’s strongest identity brands. The School of Engineering gives high priority to these activities, which allow it to understand the changing needs of the industry, the integration of its graduates into the business sector and select relevant research topics that enhance national development.
The Presidency of the EEUM has carried out several institutional visits and received companies’ delegations from various sectors for work meetings and visits to the facilities of the School of Engineering. On the 3rd July 2017, a meeting with a delegation from Efacec company was held, with the aim of discussing opportunities to enhance existing collaborations with this company in areas such as education, employability, research and technology. This meeting counted on the presence of the directors of the Department of Industrial Electronics (DEI), Department of Informatics (DI), Department of Information Systems (DSI), as well as the ALGORTIMI Research Centre and the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab).

The DVM Group company visited the School of Engineering on the 7th July, seeking to follow up the collaboration agreement signed with the University of Minho (UMinho) by the end of 2016. The main objective was to acquire a more detailed knowledge on the research, development and innovation skills of the EEUM and to look for concrete opportunities for collaboration. The programme included visits to the Centre for Mechanical and Materials Technology (CT2M), the Institute for Polymers and Composites (IPC) and the DoneLab – laboratory for the advanced additive manufacture of prototypes and tools. This laboratory is based at the Campus of Azurém and aims to support several projects that are taking place under the partnership between UMinho and Bosch Car Multimédia Portugal. The delegation also had the opportunity to visit some of the UMinho’s interface units, namely the Pole for Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP) and the Centre for Waste Valorisation (CVR).

On the 20th July 2017, a working meeting with Sonicarla – a company specialised in technical textiles – was held. The visit aimed the discuss a collaborative strategy for projects under the topic “Industry 4.0”. On the 27th July, as a follow-up, meetings were held at the company’s facilities, identifying specific cooperation areas and future projects.

“Lately, we have had an intense calendar of visits. One of the objectives is to identify areas of collaboration in order to strengthen our approach to companies. The interaction with society is one of the strategic vectors and a priority of this Presidency of the EEUM”, Paulo Sampaio, Vice-Dean of the EEUM and responsible for Interaction with Society related activities, ensured.
