A group of four students from the integrated master programme in Engineering and Industrial Management (MIEGI) of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) participated in the Global Management Challenge competition. The 2017 edition took place during July.
With the aim of acquiring management skills, namely on how to manage a company, one of the teams that integrated the Global Management Challenge was composed of four students from the 4th year of the MIEGI programme of the EEUM. Although virtually, teams have to manage a company in the best possible way to achieve its best performance.

Bruno Lopes, leader of the Accenture/Focum team, believes that having participated in this strategy and management competition carries only benefits: “We participate in study visits and get to know a factory management process throughout the 1st cycle and integrated master programmes, but our goal – under Engineering and Industrial Management vision– is more towards the top, focused on analysis and continuous improvement. This competition was an added value to understand the reality of a company”. The team is formed by three other students from the MIEGI programme of the EEUM, Ana Afonso, Francisca Lopes and José Pedro.

The company had four areas of expertise (production, marketing, human resources and financial) and the team members had the opportunity to switch roles during the various phases of competition. This rotation allowed them to acquire a better knowledge on the general operation of the company. “I would like to participate in this contest again, because I already have other background and I know how it works. It is a demanding work, but an added value for all of us and for the entire EEUM’s academic community”, Ana Afonso adds.

The student team was sponsored by Accenture Portugal, in a competition that aims to evaluate, attract talent and strengthen ties with universities. The multinational consultant recently inaugurated the new technology centre, on the 9th June, in Braga.
