Paulo Flores, Full Professor from the Department
of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the School of Engineering of the University
of Minho (EEUM), was re-elected for a second mandate as President of
International Technical Commission.
Paulo Flores,
Full Professor from the DEM, was re-elected as President of the Technical
Commission on Dynamics of Mechanical Systems of the International Federation
for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) for the biennium
2018-2019. The election was held during the 27th meeting of the
Federation’s Executive Council, which took place between 9th and 11th
October 2017, in Krakow, Poland.
The IFToMM – considered
one of the oldest and most prestigious associations in the area of Mechanical
Engineering – aims at promoting research, development and industrial
application in the Machinery and Mechanisms’ domains. The IFToMM gathers
national associations from more than 60 countries. Reindustrialising the
European space is another of the association’s main axes.
Paulo
Flores is the first and only Portuguese researcher to preside over a Technical
Commission of this International Federation, which already counts on 48 years
of history. The re-elected President believes that
this
re-election represents “on the one hand, the recognition of a job well done
and, on the other hand, the support and encouragement for the natural demands
of one more mandate. It is an honour to represent our School and our country at
the highest level”.
The researcher
was elected for the first time to this position in 2013, in Tokyo, Japan. “I am
sure that this achievement mirrors the value of the EEUM. Particularly, I
should also highlight that the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) is an
essential reference amongst the best national and international Engineering
Schools”, he added.
Paulo Flores
completed his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997 and his PhD
also in Mechanical Engineering in 2005, both at the University of Minho. He is a
Full Professor at the DEM of the EEUM since 2013. His research activity focuses
on Dynamics of Mechanical Systems, Mechanics Science, Tribology, Computational
Mechanics, Biomechanics and Medical Device Design and Higher Education.
He is author
of around half a thousand scientific, technical and pedagogical publications
and has been awarded several dozen national and international scientific
awards. He has been involved in the organisation of numerous national and
international scientific meetings, and has been invited to present lectures and
evaluate scientific projects for international organisations. He is a member of
the Research Unit for Electromechanical Microsystems (CMEMS-UMinho), where he
coordinates the research group on Biomedical Applications and Systems. Since 2016,
he has been the editor-in-chief of the Mechanism and Machine Theory journal,
the most prestigious scientific journal in the field of machines and
mechanisms. He is now President of the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics.
Paulo Flores is also Director of the Doctoral Programme in Leaders for Technical
Industries and Coordinator of the focal area Engineering Design and Advanced
Manufacturing (EDAM-UMinho) in the scope of the MIT programme.
