The HeritageCare project was recently distinguished by the European Commission with the classification “European Year of Cultural Heritage”. The research intends to monitor and inspect buildings with patrimonial value using new technologies.
“Our society does not consider the maintenance of buildings as relevant. It is something that might not be very important for us, but which is very important for buildings” Daniel Oliveira, professor from the Department of Civil Engineering and researcher at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM), coordinator of HeritageCare, an international project that intends to promote the preventive conservation of the historical and cultural heritage in Portugal, Spain and France, refers.

Beginning in September 2016, the first phase of the project was completed, which consisted in developing a guide for the detailed inspection of buildings, to be carried out on a regular basis. Currently, the research is proceeding towards the development of a platform, so that the inspections can be performed with tablets, and allowing the information to be managed centrally later on.

Up to now, two inspections have been carried out on Portuguese buildings, within a total of 60 inspections planned until the end of the project. The inspection and monitoring systems developed will be extensively tested and implemented in the Paços dos Duques de Bragança, in Guimarães.

Recently, the label “European Year of Cultural Heritage” was awarded to the project by the Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC), the executive authority of the European Commission responsible for education, culture, youth, languages and sport. The label is reserved for projects that contribute to achieving the objectives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. This way, the European Commission recognises the added value of the HeritageCare project for Europe's cultural heritage.
