The International Conference on Effyciency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems (ECOS), one of the world’s biggest in the field, joined 350 participants from 40 countries. The event took place in Cultural Centre of Vila Flor, in Guimarães, between the 17th and 21th of June.

The opening session was attended by the Assistant Secretary of Satate and Environment, José Mendes, the Mayor of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança, and members of the organisation. This was followed by an industrial challenge to identify future challenges, opportunities and strategies in the energy sector of companies, with heads of Bosch Thermotechnology, PetroAtlantic Energy Corporation, RAR Group, Navigator Company and Vista Alegre.

ECOS had an intensive programme of technical sessions, with 18 subjects ranging from the thermodynamic fundamentals to the social implications of the conversion and use of energy. One of the sessions was dedicated to the evocation of the life and work of the polish Jan Szargut, recently deceased, cofounder of the concept "exergy".

The number of prestigious scientific journals associated are testimony of the quality and prestige of ECOS 31st edition. The next will take place in 2019 in Wrocław, Poland.
