Researchers Ana Maria Rocha and Edite Fernandes received the award granted by APDIO - Portuguese Association of Operational Research during IO2017 - 27th APDIO Congress.
Ana Maria Alves Coutinho Rocha, professor at the Department of Production and Systems (DPS) of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) and Edite Manuela Graça Pinto Fernandes, retired professor of the DPS; both researchers at the ALGORITMI Research Centre, were granted the Isabel Themido Award for the paper “A shifted hyperbolic augmented Lagrangian-based artificial fish two swarm algorithm with guaranteed convergence for constrained global optimization”. Maria Fernanda Pires Costa, researcher from the Mathematics research center of the University of Minho, is also a co-author.

Published in 2016 in the “Engineering Optimization” journal, the paper presents a new hyperbolic penalty function and proposes an algorithm for nonconvex constrained global optimization problems. Global convergence is proved. The algorithm was implemented with a stochastic metaheuristic to be applied to all types of problems. The numerical results show that the proposed strategy is effective and an improvement on the solutions quality is obtained.

The award was granted during IO2017 - 27th APDIO Congress, which took place at the School of Business of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, from the 28th to the 30th June 2017. “I was very pleased and satisfied to know that the 2017 Isabel Themido Award had been granted to us. On behalf of all authors, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the award. It is a great honour that such distinguished judges have recognised the quality of our work”, Ana Maria Rocha refers.

The award intends to reward the best scientific papers published by members of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research (APDIO) during the period 2015-2016. APDIO is a scientific society which gathers the Portuguese community with research interest in Operational Research.
