The University of Minho
(UMinho) celebrated its 44th anniversary on 19th February at the Medieval Room,
Largo do Paço, Braga.
The ceremony started with the intervention of UMinho’s Rector, Rui
Vieira de Castro. Nuno Reis, President of the Student Association and Luís
Valente de Oliveira, President of the General Council of the UMinho, also
delivered their commemorative speeches. The event included the lecture “The
University at the Centre of Society”, given by John Martin, Professor from the
University College London, U.K.
The Scientific Merit Award was granted to José Manuel González-Meijóme,
Full Professor from the School of Sciences.
João Rui Mendes Oliveira, staff member of the Department of Civil
Engineering (DEC) of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM)
received the University Medal for completing 30 years working at the UMinho.
During the ceremony, Merit Awards and Doctoral Diplomas were also
awarded.
The following students of the EEUM received
Merit Awards:
Valter Jorge Brás Mário (Integrated Master Programme in Industrial
Electronics and Computer Engineering) received the Guimarães Municipality Award
(granted to the best student from all 1st cycle degrees, taught at the Campus
of Azurém, which achieved the best final classification, equal to or higher
than 16/20).
Silvana Silva Gomes (Integrated Master Programme in Biomedical
Engineering) received the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Award (CGD bank grants
annually 11 merit scholarships to the students with the best final
classification, one for each School or Institute of the UMinho).
Pedro Manuel Queirós Faria Gonçalves (Doctoral Programme in Biomedical
Engineering) and Liliana Patrícia Ferreira Abreu (Doctoral Programme in Civil
Engineering) received their doctoral diplomas.
Musical interpretations were performed by the UMinho’s Academic Choir,
accompanied by the Metals Ensemble, from the Department of Music of the UMinho,
conducted by Maestro Sílvio Cortez.
