Habilitation Exams: Rui Carlos Mendes Oliveira (DI) Back

Rui Carlos Mendes Oliveira, professor at the Department of Informatics (DI) and a member of the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) of the EEUM, obtained in September the academic degree of habilitation, approved by unanimity of the jury members.

The habilitation exams took place over two days, beginning with the presentation of the candidate’s curriculum to the jury members – Ernesto Jorge Fernandes Costa (University of Coimbra), António Maria Palma dos Reis (University of Lisboa), Mário Jorge Costa Gaspar da Silva (University of Lisboa), José Júlio Alves Alferes (University of Lisboa), João Álvaro Brandão Soares de Carvalho (University of Minho), Ricardo Jorge Silvério Magalhães Machado (University of Minho), Juan Manuel Corchado Rodríguez (University of Salamanca, Spain)

Henrique Santos Carmo Madeira (University of Coimbra), Luís Eduardo Teixeira Rodrigues (University of Lisboa), Mário Marques Freire (University of Beira Interior), José Manuel Esgalhado Valença (EEUM), Alberto José Gonçalves Carvalho Proença (EEUM), José Nuno Fonseca de Oliveira (EEUM), José António Baptista Fortes (University of Florida, USA) – followed by an analysis and discussion of a report that addresses the programme, teaching methods and lecturing experience of the curricular unit Fault Tolerance in Distributed Systems, in the scope of the Integrated Master Programme in Informatics Engineering and also the Master Programme in Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Minho.
On the second part of the exam, Rui Carlos Mendes Oliveira presented the seminar entitled “Fault Tolerant Scalable Databases”, during which the professor presented the research contribution by the distributed systems community on replicating relational DBMS over the past two decades, from the state-of-the-art to the most recent innovations in this domain.

The habilitation degree is granted to professors to whom a high merit professional curriculum demonstrating relevant research activity, advanced training or supervision is recognised, along with the authorship of high quality scientific papers after obtaining a doctoral degree.
