Former Rector of the UMinho honoured with Medal of Scientific Merit by MCTES Back

Professor António M. Cunha was Dean of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) between 2005 and 2009.
António M. Cunha, former Rector of the University of Minho (UMinho), was honoured with the Medal of Scientific Merit by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), Manuel Heitor. The medal was presented on the 25th November to recognise “the fundamental role played by António M. Cunha in the development of the higher education and scientific system in Portugal”.

The ceremony took place during Manuel Heitor’s visit to Braga, during which the creation of the Minho Advanced Computing Center, as well as the installation of the first supercomputer in Portugal, precisely in this university, was formalised.

António M. Cunha completed his degree in Production Engineering in 1984 at the UMinho. In 1991, he completed his PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering at the UMinho, with the thesis “A study on the mechanical behaviour of injection moulded polypropylene”, in the framework of a collaboration project with the Universities Queen`s - Belfast and Loughborough. He presented his habilitation exams in 2001 at the UMinho.

In 1984, António M. Cunha started his academic career at the UMinho, as assistant trainee in the Department of Polymer Engineering (DEP). He was nominated Full Professor of this Department in 2003. António M. Cunha was responsible for several roles related to academic management, namely: member of the Assembly for the Creation of University’s Statutes in 1990; member of the Assembly of Representatives and of the University’s Senate from 1989 to 1991; director of the study programme in Polymer Engineering from 1992 to 1998; director of the Department of Polymer Engineering and Research Centre in Polymer Engineering from 1999 to 2004.

He was Dean of the EEUM from 2005 to 2009. He was elected Rector of the UMinho on the 27th October 2009, and reelected for a second mandate in October 2013.
