European Doctorate


The following set of minimal terms and conditions applies to qualify for a European PhD:

  • Enrolment as a doctoral student at UMinho;
  • Attendance for a research period with a minimum duration of three months at a university in another European country, under a work plan that has been agreed between UMinho and the other university and is clearly a part of the PhD thesis preparation. The supervisor of the work performed during the stay at the partner university may be or become a co-supervisor of the thesis;
  • Certificate issued by the hosting university attesting the total period of stay as well as the work developed;
  • Inclusion of a person from a European country other than Portugal as a member of the jury for the PhD public defence;
  • Existence of two opinions in favour of the acceptance of the doctoral thesis, issued by professors belonging to two higher education institutions in two European countries other than Portugal, and such opinions shall be explicitly mentioned in the official record of the first meeting of the doctorate jury and will be an integral part thereof;
  • At the public defence of the thesis, part of the defence shall take place in another official language of the European Union other than Portuguese, a circumstance that shall be explained in the official record of the public defence.


Procudire for the attribution of the European Doctorate title by UMinho:

1st step: signature of a Memorandum of Understanding and an Addendum prior to the period of stay at the hosting institution:

  1. Signature of the Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions (if not available);
  2. Preparation and signature of the Addendum for the attribution of the European Doctorate title;
  3. Preparation of the work plan to be attached to the Addendum.

2nd step: Request for public defence:

The request for the attribution of the title should be addressed to the chair of the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering, when submitting the request for defence of the thesis. Documents to be attached to the request:

  1. two opinions in favour of the acceptance of the doctoral thesis, issued by professors belonging to two higher education institutions in two European countries other than Portugal;
  2. certificate issued by the hosting institution testifying the completion of study/research period(s);
  3. copy of the Addendum.
If the request is approved, the European Doctorate will be mentioned in your certification documents. A mention of the title of European Doctorate shall be included on the doctoral certificate, if requested.
