The students of the 1st
year of the 1st cycle degree in Fashion Design and Marketing (DMM) of
the EEUM hosted their first open exhibition in the b-in (interactive library). The
initiative is already in the fourth edition.
The project is called “Dress a Tale” and represents the story of the
«Oriana Fairy» by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. This exhibition showcases the
work of the first cycle programme’s students, just four months into the
academic year. During this time, students learn to work in the design format
and to have contact with design techniques for creating fashion products. The
aim is to make them acquire greater autonomy for further projects from an early
age.
“We are not talking about fashion models, but wearable garments. What
the students do is to take a Portuguese tale, inspired by an emblematic venue
of the city of Guimarães, and merge these two topics into an interpretation of
a wearable object”, Joana Cunha, professor in charge of the project and
director of the DMM programme, explains.
The public exhibition is carried out annually over the last four years, which
has not always occur. Initially, students presented their work to professors in
the classroom. Only the tale serving as exhibition theme changed. "We believe
that this year it would make sense to have an exhibition format open to the
public, which allows the projects to have a broader visibility, when compared
to presentations in the classroom," Joana Cunha defends.
Between January 16th and 18th, the b-in was the
stage for the 1st year of DMM of the EEUM students’ exhibition. Four
years of an initiative that promises to “dress a tale” again next year.
