The visit of Indian
Technological Institutes to the School of Engineering of the University of
Minho (EEUM) was carried out in the framework of a programme coordinated by the
Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Foundation for
Science and Technology, aiming at strengthening scientific cooperation among
these Indian institutes and Portuguese universities.
On the 22nd June 2017, the EEUM received a visit of
representatives of three Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) – Gandhinagar,
Roorkee and Madras. The delegation’s visit to Portugal aimed at strengthening
scientific cooperation among these Indian institutes and Portuguese universities/Schools
of Engineering which included the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding
towards the development of a “Joint collaborative program IIT – Portugal”. The
roadmap included visits and meetings with national representatives from Universities,
Schools of Engineering and Research Centres. The delegation was received by the
Presidency of the EEUM and also had the opportunity to visit a few research
laboratories.
This initiative took place during the first visit of Narendra Modi,
Indian Prime Minister, to Portugal. Together with António Costa, Portuguese
Prime Minister, the bilateral cooperation between the two countries was
strengthened.
Portugal and India have established 11 agreements which aim the
development of trade and scientific cooperation. This partnership involves the
Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), the Portugal-India
Business Hub, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the
International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), in Braga, and the
University of Minho (UMinho). The signed agreements create partnership among
several entities aiming at creating joint collaborative programmes and
scientific and technologic knowledge exchange in several areas, including
engineering, exact sciences, life sciences, social sciences and arts and
humanities.
