A joint initiative of MIT Portugal Programme,
University of Minho and Guimarães Municipality, DesignDAY - Guimarães Green Urban
Challenge aimed at challenging participants to present creative proposals for
urban mobility. The competition counted on around 50 participants coming from
all over the country, with different profiles, from bachelor to doctoral
students in engineering, architecture or design.
Several EEUM students were awarded during the first
edition of DesignDAY, an initiative promoted by MIT Portugal Programme,
University of Minho and Guimarães Municipality, aiming at finding creative
solutions for urban mobility to be implemented in Guimarães. During this
edition, under the theme “Increase/Stimulate the use of bicycle in the city of
Guimarães”, participants were challenged to present innovative solutions to
promote cycling urban mobility.
The “B.Bus” project won the Guimarães Green Urban
Challenge competition. The team, composed by Flávia Barbosa, student of the
Doctoral Programme Leaders for Technical Industries (MIT-Portugal) at the EEUM,
Pedro Baptista, graduate in Product Design at the University of Minho, and Raquel
Figueiredo, student of the doctoral programme in Sustainable Energy Systems at
the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (MIT-Portugal), presented a
new concept of a bus for bicycle users, allowing them to transport their
bicycles inside the vehicle.
The project “Bicla do Rei”, developed by Ahmad Alshaghel, student of the
international master programme in Sustainable Built Environment, Sophia Moraes,
student of the Doctoral Programme in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Diogo
Cunha, student of the master programme in Technology and Digital Art, all from
the EEUM, received an honourable mention. Under the theme “Implementing a
social, economic and environmental bike-sharing system for Guimarães”, the
team proposed an innovative bicycle sharing and transport network using the
public transportation network as mobile docking stations.
The competition counted on around 30 participants
coming from all over the country, with different profiles, from bachelor to
doctoral students in engineering, architecture or design.
DesignDAY is an initiative aiming at creating an idea
generation platform which allows the Municipality to award and implement the
most relevant projects. The first edition of this event was dedicated to the
urban mobility sector in Guimarães, a theme related to the city’s application
process to European Green Capital in 2020. Mobility and creation of sustainable
solutions in transports are still one of modern city’s challenges.
