Luani Costa, Master in Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation by the University of Minho, won one of the prizes of 14th student competition “Textile Structures for New Building” of Techtextil 2017 – International Trade Fair for Technical Textiles and Nonwovens. The award ceremony will take place on the 9th May 2017.
Supported and sponsored by international association TensiNet, in addition to the Architonic platform partnership, the contest is intended for students and young professionals of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Product Design, or related areas, valuing innovative ideas and innovative solutions for current problems through the use of textile materials.

One of the awards will be delivered to Luani Costa, which distinguished the architect – currently researcher at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho’s (EEUM) research centres 2C2T and ISISE – for the development of a smart architectural panel, using bending-active structures and textile materials multifunctional integrated with the kinetic architecture principle. The project was developed during Luani’s dissertation for the Master programme in Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation, carried out at the EEUM, entitled “Development of Smart and Active Textile Architectural Bending Structure”.

The project corresponds to a structural solution – a panel – inspired by the leaves of plants, which can be incorporated into new or existing buildings and applied on facades or roofs, or similar situations. Using the kinetic concept integrated with textile membranes, the panel adapts easily to the environmental conditions such as wind, rain, sunlight, as well as the user’s needs, improving the functional performance in buildings.

Luani Costa’s dissertation was supervised by the Professors Raul Fangueiro and Luís Ramos, both from the Department of Civil Engineering of the EEUM. Currently, they form a working team for the development of a new research area related to Smart Membranes Structures.
