The TERMIS-EU award – of the Tissue Engineering and
Regenerative Medicine International Society – highlights the most important
contributions to the scientific literature of the UMinho’s researcher. The award
was presented on the 29th June 2017, in Davos, Switzerland.
The Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society
(TERMIS), the world's largest society in this area of research, has granted the
TERMIS-EU award for contributions to the scientific literature to Rui L. Reis,
director of the 3B's Research Group (Research Group on Biomaterials,
Biodegradables and Biomimetics) from the School of Engineering of the
University of Minho (EEUM) and vice-rector for UMinho's research. This
distinction is the most important scientific award that TERMIS attributes to a
scientist working in Europe.
The TERMIS-EU award was granted only for the second time in the history
of the Society, after being awarded in 2013 to the scientist Ranieri Cancedda,
one of the founders of regenerative medicine in Europe. During the award
ceremony, Rui L. Reis presented a plenary lecture, describing the last 20 years
of his research to an audience of 1300 scientists from more than 50 countries.
The researcher has developed his entire career in Europe, always based in
Portugal.
TERMIS-EU delivers the senior award to those who have an outstanding
publication record, having made outstanding contributions to the scientific
literature in the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Its
importance lies in systematic contributions to the scientific literature,
through the publication of scientific articles, review articles, patents,
international dissemination books, plenary lectures and invited communications
in major congresses, as well as other contributions in this scientific field.
The award recipient should be referenced and cited - in a continuous and
growing way - by their peers when they publish other works. At the award
ceremony, TERMIS-EU highlighted "the unique career of the Portuguese
scientist, his leadership ability in the field and impressive bibliometrics,
both in terms of publications and citations by other authors”.
The director of the 3B's Research Group and full professor at the EEUM
has won the two major awards of the European Society of Biomaterials (Jean
Leray and George Winter) and a Clemson Award, from the American Society of
Biomaterials.
