The International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications held its 18th edition in Melbourne, Australia.
Filipe Alvelos, Associate Professor of the Department of Production and Systems of the EEUM and researcher of ALGORITMI, was awarded the "Best Paper Award" for the article "Mixed integer programming models for fire fighting". The article proposes a set of mixed-integer programming models (MIP) to optimize the location of a set of resources in firefighting. The MIP model integrates fire propagation and site resource decisions.

The award was given during the 18th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2018), held in June 2nd to 5th, in Melbourne. The evaluation focused not only on the merits of the paper, but also the presentation at the conference.

Computer science is a mainstay of most current research, industrial and commercial activities, and plays a unique role in exploiting information and communication technologies as innovative technologies. The ICCSA Conference provides a real opportunity to discuss new issues, address complex issues and find advanced training solutions to shape new trends in Computer Science.

ICCSA is participating in a series of highly successful international conferences on computational science and its applications, already in its 18th edition. In 2014, this Conference was held in Guimarães and was supported by the University of Minho.
