Description

The main objectives of the degree in Materials Engineering are:
- Ensure sound training in materials physics and chemistry;
- Provide students with the scientific knowledge regarding the properties of different types of materials;
- Promote the study of materials manufacturing methods and technologies;
- Develop the students ability to interpret structure-properties-processing relationships of the materials;
- Enable the material selection according to its application.

Key learning outcomes

The Degree in Materials Engineering aims to provide students with appropriate skills for their integration into the labor market and to ensure that they have adequate ability and responsibility to make a contribution in their area of expertise. In this sense, the Degree in Materials Engineering gives graduates the skills, knowledge and confidence that ensure their ability to identify the relevant properties of various types of traditional materials, characterize and interpret the different structures of materials and estimate their suitability in technical applications. For a wide array of metallic, polymeric and ceramic materials, the graduates should know the manufacturing technologies and processes applicable to obtaining products and know how to apply and integrate their knowledge in solving problems in contexts related to their field of study.

Access to higher education

This course gives students the technical and scientific ability to pursue subsequent specialization studies providing access to Masters Courses in Materials Engineering or related áreas.

Careers

Graduates in Materials Engineering cover a significant range of activities, from polymers, metals, ceramics and composites, with special emphasis on the automotive, electronics, foundry, metalworking, textile, ceramics and footwear industry and in the energy and environment sectors, among others. Since Materials is an area that is typically associated with a strong scientific activity, it is easy and attractive to undertake postgraduate studies and internships in Portugal or abroad. Companies and R&D entities are also career opportunities for Materials Engineers.
